Thunderbird Events Schedule 2018-19 and 40th Anniversary Pow Wow Highlights

Is it possible to find a pow wow that celebrates the Kiowa Gourd Dance (blessing dance), on the east coast, while honoring Native leaders? .

The 40th Annual Grand Mid-Summer Pow Wow’s MC  Thunderbird American Indian Dancers founding director and pioneer for Native American Indian events in the NY area, Louis Mofsie; and Kiowa elders and Gourd Dance singers Dennis and Ralph Zotye shared comprehensive Native American knowledge over the weekend’s activities. Dance contests with almost 200 dancers from all over the Americas were organized by Kitty Mullen, Julian Gabourel and Sandy Capasso.

Friday evening climaxed with a rainy thundery hoop dance by Marie Poncé (Lucayo Taino/Cherokee), which made way for beautiful Saturday and Sunday weather, for the artisans  and dancers. These artists and craftspeople represented traditional crafts and practices from Canada to Peru, Maya to Iroquois,. Exhibitors shared award winning wampum from the likes of Grant Dial, Harry Wallace, Tecumseh Cesar, feather work from artists like Lurch Pagan and Lola and Dean Swimmer, S.W. Pueblo Kachina dolls and pottery from Jim Cathcart, Mayan weaving demonstrations from Erikson and Miriam Gomez and collections of hand-made and collected embroidery from regions surrounding Oaxaca by Rosalba Rodriguez, and handmade tools, turquoise, beadwork and moccassins from artists like Gabriel and Lisa Rodriguez, Tony and Marcy Langhorn and Carol Sobolewski, Anton Martinez, who gave a traditional Yaki Deer Dance presentation. and many others.

There was even a visit from Jessica a New Mexico Indian princess.

Indian of the Year was celebrated: Bronx, NY Native Bobby Gonzalez (Taino) Storyteller, Author and Activist on Sunday July 29th. Honoring processions for both Queens County Farm Museum Executive Director Amy FischettiBoncardo and Bobby Gonzalez . Michael A. Taylor’s hoop dance and “Our Father” sung by Dennis Con accompanied by American Indian sign language by Kiowa elder and dancer created a graceful crescendo to the weekend’s festivities.
