Lifetime Achievement Award for Louis Mofsie and Thunderbird American Indian Dancers at American Dance Guild

“So fantastic that the American Dance Guild takes this opportunity to honor Native American Dance, Louis Mofsie said tonight. This Lifetime Achievement Award from American Dance Guild follows a Thunderbird featured performance at Jacob’s Pillow Inside/Out Festival this summer, during the upcoming 40th year celebration of their Annual Grand Mid-Summer Pow Wow at Queens County Farm Museum July 27 – 29, 2018. Matoaka Little Eagle spoke congratulating Louis and recalling that her father, Swift Eagle, mentored Louis Mofsie and other founding Native teens like Muriel Miguel, Margaret, Sam Tarrant, in a Mohawk church basement in Brooklyn. Louis, Matoaka says, now Louis Mofsie mentors her.

Louis Mofsie and The Thunderbrd American Indian Dancers ( all volunteers), along with choreographer, Garth Fagan and Dean of the American Dance Festival, Martha Myers were awarded Lifetime Achievement pkaque September 7th, as part of this year’s Annual Performance Festival of the American Dance Guild at The Ailey Citigroup Theater, 405 West 55th Street, New York City. “Celebrating Diversity” is the theme of the 2017 Festival, presenting thirty-four artists, companies and honorees representing a broad spectrum of American dance life.

Louis Mofsie Thunderbird American Indiand Dancers at Theater for the New City

Sunday September 10th, a twenty minute performance of American Indian dances were shared on stage, ending with feathered bouquets for each TAID member and another honoring speech for Louis Mofsie and the Thunderbirds. Eye on Dance TV host and avid reporter and documentarian for the Thunderbird American Indian Dancers Annual Concert at Theater for the New City, Celia Ipiotis, introduced her historic interview footage of Louis Mofsie in 1985 with gorgeous footage of Alan Shooting Star Brown, Kitty Gabourel Mullen, Debbie Stalk and Michael Tarrant, known in the 80’s for his hoop dancing, doing the Two Step to Louis’ singing and hand drumming, footage of Garth Fagan and his dancers, detailing their collaboration and creative process The pastries were delicious tonight,

Garth Fagan dancers Natalie Rogers and Vitolio Jeane gave richly nuanced and excellent performances in dramatic multi-disciplined dance, yielding the evenings largest standing ovation for Caribbean themes to Bob Marley music. Other performers included: Molissa Fenley, Lisa Giobbi, Lucas Melfi, Catherine Meredith, Julian Nichols, Sabatino Verlezza, and Nancy Zendora. Lots of talk of legacy.
