Annual Thunderbird Auction at Theater for the New City

The Thunderbird American Indian Dancers will be holding our annual holiday auction of Native American items.  Jewelry, leather goods, baskets, rattles, clothing, blankets and other beautiful items will be available.  
The Auction will be on Saturday, December 4, 2021, from 3 PM until about 5 PM,  at the Theater for the New City, 155 First Avenue, in Manhattan (at East 10th Street).  Previews begin at 2 PM.   Please note the change in location and time from previous years. 
This is a great opportunity for early holiday gift shopping.  Items can often be bought at bargain prices, as opening bids are well below retail prices. 
All proceeds from this auction are used for the Thunderbird American Indian Scholarship Fund, which has awarded over 500 grants for the college education of Native Americans.
All are welcome to attend.  Admission is free.  (Donations are appreciated, but no one is turned away).

Autumn Celebration Outdoors at Queens Farm Museum Floral Park hosts Thunderbird American Indian Dancers!!

This autumnal celebration will be held outdoors at the Queens County Farm Museum, 73-50 Little Neck Parkway, Floral Park, New York.
All admissions must be purchased on-line and should be made in advance.   All details and ticket purchases can be found at the Queens Farm website www.QueensFarm.org/autumn-dance-celebration.
The Thunderbirds will perform dances from various regions and tribes.  Note: this is not a pow-wow open to all dancers; except for limited audience participation, only Thunderbird dancers will be performing.  The dance performance will be between 2 and 4 PM.  
The Farm grounds will also host merchants selling Native American food,  jewelry, clothing, pottery and other items.
Admission to the Farm grounds and the Native American Market is at no charge.  For the dance performance, admissions are $15 for adults, $10 for children 4-11 years old, with those 3 and younger being admitted free.  
Parking is free.  There is no seating provided, so please bring your own chairs or blankets.

This spectacular 3-day event is NYC’s largest Powwow and one of the top ten in the USA. It features intertribal Native American dance competitions by over forty Indian Nations. The Grand Entry showcases the dancers’ full regalia and The Sunset Lighting of the Bonfire is an enchanting ceremony. ​DANCER REGISTRATION
Dancer registration is Friday 5-7 PM & Saturday after 11 AM.  Contest dancers must register by Saturday 1 PM.  Although the majority of contest points are given Saturday and Sunday, participation points are awarded for Friday night dancing.  Contests will run rain or shine.  All dancers must pay a single day admission fee (covering the full weekend) before they enter the pow wow grounds, but there is no dancer registration fee. 

Admissions can only be bought on-line, preferably in advance: go to queensfarm.org/events.html, click on “POWWOW TICKETS”  and purchase by clicking on the linked EventBrite page.
Overnight Accommodation: Dancer RV’s must be moved into the parking lot overnight; no overnight tent camping.

Lotus Music and Dance is thrilled to announce that Drums Along the Hudson: A Native American Festival and Multicultural Celebration will return to Inwood Hill Park on Sunday, June 6th 2021, and that our honoree will be Stephanie Dabney, prima ballerina of the Dance Theater of Harlem from 1979 – 1994. The all-day event will also feature Mohawk Elder Tom Porter, Soles of Duende, the Thunderbird American Indian Dancers, Heyna Second Son and Silvercloud Singers and Dancers, and many more special guests and performances. 

We will be working closely with the City and the Parks Department, as well as keeping a close eye on State and Federal COVID safety guidelines to ensure a safe and fun experience. Due to size restrictions in place due to COVID-19, we as that you RSVP to attend – do so TODAY to reserve your space!

About Drums Along the Hudson®
A Native American and Multicultural Celebration

In September 2002, with a generous grant from the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs, Kamala Cesar, Artistic Director of Lotus Music and Dance, and Carl Nelson, Producer, created Drums Along the Hudson®: A Native American Festival. It began as a traditional Pow Wow to celebrate Native American heritage and culture, and also to commemorate the Lenape people who first inhabited Inwood Hill Park, or Shorakapok (“edge of the water”). This event first took place annually in the spring, thereafter we added something new and different each year to make the event more exciting and enjoyable — including a Shad tasting, a White Pine tree planting (the Iroquois symbol of peace), international foods, drummers and dancers and a Native American Arts in Education Initiative. The event has attracted attendees from 400 in the first year to over 8,000 in recent years. Learn More

Theater for the New City will present its 46th annual Thunderbird American Dancers Dance Concert and Pow Wow live-streamed from the Johnson Theater, on February 20, 2021 from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM.  This “virtual Pow-Wow” will be accessible from TNC’s website, www.theaterforthenewcity.net, and available there on-demand until February 28, 2021. There will be dances, stories, and traditional music from Native Peoples of the Northeast, Southwest, and Great Plains regions. The event, emceed by Bessie-winner Louis Mofsie (Hopi/Winnebago), has become a treasured New York tradition for celebrating our diversity by honoring the culture of our first Americans.  TNC donates all proceeds from this event to college scholarship funds for Native American students.  Admission is only $5 and additional donations will be gratefully accepted.  The event is recommended for all ages. Click here for tickets!

The Thunderbird American Indian Dancers and the Queens County Farm Museum are presenting two afternoons of Native American Dance performance on Saturday November 7 and Sunday November 8, 2020, from 12 noon to 4 PM.  There will also be merchants selling Native American jewelry, clothing, pottery and other items.

CANCELLED: Thunderbird Music Workshop at AICH March 21st due to community transmission of COVID-19

The Thunderbird Americaan Indian Dancers, Inc., in light of sustained community transmission of COVID-19 in the New York City area and responsibility to our loyal community are cancelling the upcoming Dance Workshop originally scheduled at American Indian Community House 39 Eldridge St. There is no rescheduled date for this event, however future cultural events like our Annual Pow Wow at Queens County Farm Museum on July 24-26, 2020 are still in place.

Corona Virus: What You Can Do:

1. If you have a runny nose and sputum, you have a common cold.
2. Coronavirus pneumonia is a dry cough with no runny nose.
3. This new virus is not heat-resistant and will be killed by temperatures of just 26/27 degrees.  It hates the sun.
4. If someone sneezes it takes about 10 feet before it drops to the ground and is no longer airborne.
5. If it drops on a metal surface it will live for at least 12 hours-so if you come into contact with any metal surface wash your hands as soon as you can with a bacterial soap.
6. On fabric it can survive for 6-12 hours, normal laundry detergent will kill it.
7. Drinking warm water is effective for all viruses.  Try not to drink liquids with ice.
8. Wash your hands frequently as the virus can only live on your hands for 5-10 minutes but a lot can happen during that time.  You can rub your eyes, pick your nose and so on.
9. You should also gargle as a prevention.  A simple solution of salt in warm water will suffice.
10. Can’t emphasize enough….drink plenty of water!

Symptoms

1. It will first infect the throat so you’ll have a sore throat lasting 3-4 days
2. The virus then blends into a nasal fluid that enters the trachea and then the lungs causing pneumonia.  This takes about 5/6 days.
3. With the pneumonia comes high fever and difficulty in breathing.
4. The nasal congestion is not like the normal kind.  You feel like you’re drowning.  It’s imperative you then seek immediate attention.

Prevention

1. The new Coronavirus may not show sign of infection for many days.  How can one know if he/she is infected?  By the time they have fever and/or cough and go to the hospital the lung is usually 50% Fibrosis and it’s too late.
2. Taiwan experts provide a simple self-check that we can do every morning:  Take a deep breath and hold your breath for more than 10 seconds.  If you complete it successfully without coughing, without discomfort, stiffness or tightness, etc. it proves there is no Fibrosis in the lungs, basically indicates no infection.
3. In critical time, please self-check every morning in an environment with clean air.  Serious excellent by Japanese doctors treating COVID-19 cases;

Everyone should ensure your mouth and throat are most…never dry.Take a few sips of water every 15 minutes at least. Lime or lemon add Vitamin C. Why?Even if the virus gets into your mouth, drinking water or other liquids will wash them down through your throat and into the stomach.Once there your stomach acid will kill all the virus.  If you don’t drink enough water more regularly the virus can enter your windpipe and into the lungs.  That’s very dangerous.
