Annual Thunderbird American Indian Dancers Concert at Theater for the New City 2022

The Thunderbird American Indian Dancers are presenting their 48th annual concert of music, dance and storytelling at the Theater for the New City the weekends of January 13-15 and 20-22, 2023.    

This is a unique educational and entertainment experience.  The Thunderbirds perform authentic dances of the Iroquois, Southwest and Great Plains Native American peoples. Each dance is introduced with a complete explanation of the dance and its cultural context and is accompanied by live music.  

Shows are on Fridays, January 13 and 20, and Saturdays,  January 14 and 21 at 8 PM, with ticket prices of $15.

There are also special matinee performances for children on Saturdays and Sundays at 3 PM, January 14, 15, 21 and 22, with tickets for children from 5 to12 years old only one dollar (children must be accompanied by an adult paying the regular $15 price.  Attendance is not recommended for children under 5.)

The Family of Sam and Vickie Tarrant

are sponsoring a special honoring program for them at the Thunderbird Powwow. Vickie and Sam were long-time Thunderbird members who passed away during the pandemic.

A giveaway and Women’s and Men’s Traditional Special Dance contests each offer a total of $1300 in prize money.

This spectacular annual 3-day event is NYC’s largest Powwow and one of the top ten in the USA. It features intertribal Native American dance competitions by over forty Indian Nations. The Grand Entry showcases the dancers’ full regalia and The Sunset Lighting of the Bonfire is an enchanting ceremony. Program features an expansive market of authentic Native American art, crafts, jewelry and food (don’t miss the fry bread!). Singing by The Silver Cloud Singers, Heyna Second Sons, Smoke Dance, Native American Hoop Dance, Inter-Tribals and more. An immersive cultural experience not to be missed!

South, to Farm Entrance Gate. Free Parking available at the Farm.

Transfer to Q46 bus eastbound to Little Neck
Parkway. Walk 3 blocks north to Farm Entrance Gate.
Long Island Railroad: To Floral Park or Little Neck Station, where car service is available.

All cars must be parked and stationary before spectator entry times! No exceptions.

Dancer registration is Friday 5-7 PM & Saturday after 11 AM.  Contest dancers must register by Saturday 1 PM.  Although the majority of contest points are given Saturday and Sunday, participation points are awarded for Friday night dancing.  Contests will run rain or shine.  All dancers must pay at least a single day admission fee (covering the full weekend) before they enter the pow wow grounds, but there is no dancer registration fee. 

Admissions can only be bought on-line, preferably in advance: go to queensfarm.org/events.html, click on “POWWOW TICKETS”  and purchase by clicking on the linked EventBrite page.
Overnight Accommodation: Dancer RV’s must be moved into the parking lot overnight.

Theater for the New City will present its 46th annual Thunderbird American Dancers Dance Concert and Pow Wow live-streamed from the Johnson Theater, on February 20, 2021 from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM.  This “virtual Pow-Wow” will be accessible from TNC’s website, www.theaterforthenewcity.net, and available there on-demand until February 28, 2021. There will be dances, stories, and traditional music from Native Peoples of the Northeast, Southwest, and Great Plains regions. The event, emceed by Bessie-winner Louis Mofsie (Hopi/Winnebago), has become a treasured New York tradition for celebrating our diversity by honoring the culture of our first Americans.  TNC donates all proceeds from this event to college scholarship funds for Native American students.  Admission is only $5 and additional donations will be gratefully accepted.  The event is recommended for all ages. Click here for tickets!
